About Songa Energy Burundi

Songa Energy is developing two hydroelectric projects in Burundi with a combined generation capacity of over 10MW to provide affordable electricity to tens of thousands of rural households. The first plant - Ruvyironza - is already operating, while the second one – Mulembwe – is under construction with operations planning to start in March 2027.

About the Role

Songa Energy is hiring an Accountant to support the Finance team with day-to-day bookkeeping, data processing, and administrative tasks. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented and motivated individual looking to grow within a dynamic, impact-driven organization operating across Burundi.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Working closely with the Finance team in Burundi and the other Group Accountants, the Accountant will be entrusted with the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform bookkeeping and data entry in accordance with IFRS standards:

    • Record daily invoices for suppliers and customers;

    • Post daily journal entries for accruals, prepayment and payroll;

    • Perform weekly cash reconciliations;

    • Process and reconcile weekly intercompany transactions;

    • Update general ledger accounts;

    • Maintain accuracy of accounting records;

    • Perform monthly accounts closing and reconciliations.

  • Maintain proper filing of accounting records.

  • Review suppliers' invoices by verifying approvals, tax compliance and accuracy of invoice details.

  • Track customers payments and follow up on overdue balances.

  • Review and post employee expense claims, ensuring accuracy and compliance.

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts as well as annual financial statements.

  • Provide support during external audits.

  • Support the Finance team with ad hoc administrative and reporting tasks.

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a similar role.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Accounting, Economics, Finance, or similar.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).

  • Having an experience with Odoo ERP will be an advantage.

  • Keen to learn about ERP configuration and setting up processes to facilitate business.

Competencies:

  • Strong data analytical skills including Excel.

  • Knowledge on purchases ledger process.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Effective organizational skills.

  • Commitment to professionalism and high standards of integrity and ethics.

  • Ability to work independently and with minimal instruction.

Other:

  • Demonstrated interest in renewable energy, international development, and social impact.

  • Experience working with an accounting or auditing firm would be a plus.

  • Fluency in English and French is required.

  • Residing in Burundi.

  • Willingness to take initiative on proactive problem solving.
